Fall 2023
Meet Jo Anne Gitchell (pictured far right).  She has been a Master Naturalist with the Lake of the Ozarks chapter since 2012.  Jo Anne recently moved to the Holden area and has decided to join our chapter.  She has jumped right in, too.  Recently, she joined Gerald, Ruth and Roxanne doing water quality surveys.  Welcome to Hi Lonesome, Jo Anne!
New Class Recruitment Attempts
One September 8, Ryan, Marge and Roxanne, carried our banner and walked in the Cole Camp Fair parade. Since we didn’t have the prairie wagon or any kind of float, we joined the parade at the post office instead of down by the nursing home. The walk, therefore, was quite manageable. Marge and Roxanne carried the banner and Ryan handled out brochures as the announcer read the write up Marge provided.

On September 23, we had a table at Cole Camp’s Oktoberfest. We had brochures, business cards and a sign-up book. Although the weather threatened with hot temperatures and then a storm, we fared really well with moderate temps and cloud cover but no rain. Marge, Elizabeth and Roxanne were there for part or all of the time.  We talked with several, seemingly interested, folks and ended up with three names in the book. A few people were planning to check into a chapter closer to where they live while some others were quite interested in the stream team program. Some folks told us of their plans to convert old garden areas to native and others of removing invasives.

State Fair Fun

Paul and Roxanne helped out again, 3rd year, at MDC’s Invasive Species event in the Highway Gardens at the State Fair held on the first day of the fair. Paul had a few edible bugs and lots of cool things he made out of invasive wood. An impressive display, as always, his tables delighted many. Roxanne had her pressed flower things and gave away small packets of native seeds. She hopes to have a craft for the children and child at heart next year.

On the last day of the fair, they both returned to help out in the Xplor Room (formerly the Discovery Room). They, mostly, manned the tables of macroinvertibrates. There were three tanks set up, one featured a water scorpion, one featured two crawdads and one featured a dragonfly nymph. They had fishing flys on display that mimicked the stages of some of the macros. They also had two giant hooks and ropes with directions on how to tie the fisherman’s knot. Although it was a bit of a long day, they were inside and out of the blistering heat.

Burying Beetles at Taberville

On June 20th, Roxanne and Ryan were at Taberville Prairie with lots of volunteers from MDC, DNR, other Master Naturalist chapters and others for an American Burying Beetle project. Despite the heat, they dug holes and placed beetles into their holes. Our understanding is they plan to continue the effort for some time.

Exploring the Night at KNSP

Knob Noster State Park had planned three International Dark Skies Events with the Astronomical Society of Kansas City and the Missouri Master Naturalist Hi Lonesome Chapter. The second event planned for June 30th was canceled because of the bad weather forecast. The third event was scheduled for August 3rd. Roxanne attended this event and even though the weather wanted a repeat, they were not deterred this time. The clouds cooperated with the astronomer, and attendees were able to see so many stars. There was some lightning far off and that’s where it stayed.  Prior to the Dark Sky event, Roxanne also did the owl prowl.  They attempted to call in the barred owl and the eastern screech owl. Alas, no one wanted to talk at that time. However, when they moved down to the telescope. After a few minutes, what do you know…two, yes, not one but two, eastern screech owls decided to make their proximity know. It was fun listening to them.
